July 2002

This is just the start of my new page or rather, pages, of our trip to
Scandinavia with the World Wide Country Tours group, the same travel company
that took us to Lake Michigan last summer. I will be adding both text and
pictures as soon as I can find the time.
Sweden
First, we arrived in Stockholm after our overnight flight and were taken on a
city tour
, I guess because our hotel rooms were not available.
I'm not really sure of the sequence but we saw a great deal of the city and,
especially, the
city hall
a beautiful and varied edifice.
We have a fabulous dinner at an Italian restaurant that night and then the next
day we were picked up by our second escort, the wife of the man who did the
city tour. She took us on a
cruise
around the lakes abutting the city with their locks and beautiful scenes.
Later, we were taken to visit the tour director's home and got a taste of living
around the city of Stockholm. Private houses don't appear to be available and people
buy their apartments. Another interesting fact was that everyone is subsidized, they get a certain amount of money for each child. I had asked our host about welfare and he said, "we don't have welfare". I guess subsidies are not considered welfare.
That night we wandered around looking for a place to eat and met a very nice couple on
the street who took us to a restaurant where we enjoyed a typical Swedish meal. I have their e-mail address and, when I get these pages finished I will let them know the url so they can see our pictures. This is what makes travel so great, you get to meet people and learn so much about their culture and their way of life.
The next day we set off toward Norway and stopped in Upsala where we toured the
beautiful
church
there.
