Holly's Virtual Notebook

Page 5

As I understand this homework assignment we are supposed to show a page (or pages) that follow the requirements for a "not bad" web page. Or, if we don't have a page, project what we would plan to do in a page to be built in the future. Some of the qualities should be:

  1. Few or no very large images to slow the download process and no "missing" images.
  2. Backgrounds that don't obscure the printing.
  3. A good mix of text and pictures to keep the page interesting.
  4. Remembering your audience
  5. Paying attention to grammar and spelling
  6. No broken links
  7. Good navigation between pages and on the page itself.
  8. Careful use of music and animation.

The pages I am going to send you to are ones I developed some time ago to communicate with some of my family members and later to link to some stories about our parents. Needless to say, I WAS thinking about my audience and am afraid I was very much into animations at the time. These were snagged from various places on the internet but with my study of PSP8 I will be able to make my own and, hopefully, will be more judicious in their use. But this example is to show some of the other attributes.

The first page is called Family Messages and links to three birthday pages as well as a Family Story page which continues on the genealogy site. When I first developed these pages I coordinated the colors to make them feel like they were in the same mood. But then the third birthday was so special I made it entirely different.

I've done a little tweaking of the pages trying to make the tags consistent with what I've been learning but hopefully this will be a test of the other factors of the pages rather than the code. I was just beginning my venture into page building and felt really proud of my accomplishments at the time. Now that I look back at it I think I did a pretty good job given the limits of my training (virtually none).

The positive things I think I accomplished were to develop some warm, friendly pages which are interesting (at least to the people they were intended for) and that have good navigation features. I am pretty careful about spelling and grammar and made a point of having the alt tag on all the pictures so that people who turn off their ability to view pictures or don't want to take the time don't have to do so but will be aware of what's going on. I checked all my links and they and the ones on the linked pages are also active. I won't guarantee the code on those page though because I just don't have time to review all of them. I did try them in several browsers and IE, Netscape, Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox and OffByOne all worked fine.

Just as an aside someone mentioned one of the reason to include an email address was in case we got a commendation. I don't know the value of it but I did receive notice in the Eastman's Genealogy Newsletter on February 13, 2002 for my regular genealogy pages. It's true my cousin entered me but it does indicate that the sites are screened and he chooses the better ones. It was a lot of fun to be mentioned.

Well, here goes. This url will bring you to my Family Messages page.
