This tutorial is the property of hollys closet.com and has been written as an assignment for Winni's How To Write Tutorials Group. You are welcome to link to it but do not claim it as your own.

What you'll need:

  1. PSP (I use version X but this can be done in any version)
  2. A photograph of any subject. My friend, Camille Johnson, has given me
permission to use this shot of her adorable granddaughter.
  3. We will use a mask and a texture. Here are the Mask cat028 and the Wet Fall Leaves Texture
  4. Font of your choice. I used Comic Sans MS.
  5. All settings will remain the same unless stated otherwise.
The texture is standard in PSP X but I have included it if you aren't using that version. Just move it to your Textures folder.

Okay, let's begin:

Step 1

In Paint Shop Pro open your Mask cat028 and a photo or graphic of your choice.
Minimize the mask
Resize the photo to a manageable size. Since this was a large photo I used 50% to start.
Shift D to make a copy and close original without saving changes.

Step 2

On your materials palette select a light color from your picture for the foreground and a dark one for the background.
On the layer palette right click and Promote Background Layer.
File/Save As Image A.

Note: If you have your computer set to automatically save(File/Preferences/Auto Save)you will
always have a copy of your image in the event PSP or your computer close. In any event...save often.

Step 3

Select/Select All

Duplicate the mask layer one to three times depending on the color. We want it to be dense enough to appear over our photograph.
Close the background layer

Step 7

Open and Select the background layer
Effects/Texture

Wet Leaves
Restore or maximize your Image A.
Copy/Paste as a new layer between the mask and the background.

Paste Image between Layers

Step 8

There are a couple of ways you can proceed from here. First you can move the image up into the left corner so there's plenty of room for your text or you can use your pick tool and move the image to the right and rotate it a bit as I did in my sample. We will proceed with the second option.

Add a drop shadow to the frame

Step 9

Activate the Text Tool
Change your background to a darker tone of the same color.

I used Comic Sans MS and here are the settings I used.

Vertical Text
Please especially note the Direction and the Kerning figures.
This text will be vertical and the kerning will adjust the letters to be not too far apart.
Resize the text using the vector nodes.
Align it with the frame using the rotation node.

Step 10

On the Text palette change the Direction back to center and Kerning to a plus figure. I used 59.
Write the second part of your text beneath the picture and adjust it in the same way as before.
Layers/Convert to Raster Layer
Effects/3D/drop shadow

Step 11

Add your copyright recognition and your watermark on separate layers
so you can adjust the opacity on each one.
Save/Export to jpeg.
That's it.
Hope you enjoyed this tut as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Here's an image I made with the first option, the photo remaining straight on the background.
