Focus should be on quality growth; not preventing it

Several weeks ago Vickie Terrell wrote a letter to the Times Georgian about rezoning for commercial use of acreage on Fairfield Road adjacent to her home. The zoning meeting was held and a modified zoning was approved, reducing the space to be used in this way. I also noticed an extensive article on her behalf in the May 5 Times Georgian.

We left Marietta in a flight from traffic resulting from Town Center Mall. Therefore, I understand and sympathize with the concerns of the community but believe there are some things that are being overlooked.

First, it is inevitable that this kind of development will occur in the near future. I believe resistance to a quality area built by a responsible individual may result in a not-so-responsible person using the land for something less desirable; for example, the resistance to Tara Construction's plans for doctor's offices, mailing facility, a retirement community, etc. on the other side of Fairfield Road. Community pressure prevailed and we now have the current row of houses with driveways from each one, dog runs and zoning for a day care center with its resulting very dangerous traffic just beyond our gate.

Second, when the zoning for The Country Boy Store was proposed, I don't recall any dissension and I don't understand why this was acceptable and the current plan is not. Also there are currently a day care center and two construction/real estate offices on Fairfield Road.

I believe we need to look ahead and not risk some kind of tacky use of this land and opt for making sure the development is done as tastefully as possible. I also believe that Mike Horton is a responsible, reasonable and trustworthy person and we shouldn't be suspicious of someone just because we disagree with him.

My last point is that I could find no coverage in the paper stating the other side of the question.
